Summer Fete is a success!

Saturday the 3rd of July was one of the highlights of the Manor Park social calendar: The Little Ilford School Fete 2010. It is a great opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy some fantastic foodie delights and mosey along different stalls selling all manner of things. From Henna stalls and homemade jewellery stalls to food from around the world, everyone enjoyed selling, buying and sharing experiences with those around them. We had a ‘Penalty Shoot Out’ kindly ran by our local Police, Sponge a Teacher, a deckchair exhibition, a Graffiti artist, a Renault East London display, a Nu-Sound Radio transmission and a live stage with performances from both professionals and students alike. MP Stephen Timm’s joined in the fun and said ‘it’s incredible to see everyone coming together to enjoy a true community event’. Head teacher Yvonne Powell said ‘Thanks to everyone who came together to make this summer event so special’ This not to be missed event is usually held on the first weekend of July, so if you missed it this time make sure to come next year!

Pictured: Year 7's perform to a busy crowd.

One Young Citizen Has Been Motivated To Make A Difference...

Hafiz of Year 9 at Little Ilford School, was outraged when he learnt that the BBC Trust had decided to wind down his favourite radio station the BBC Asian Network. This came as a big blow because it was announced during the same week that the radio station broadcast a live show from a classroom at Little Ilford School. The determined student wanted to do something about it, so he decided to put together a petition. The petition declared “We the undersigned are angry that the BBC Asian Network is being stopped. We want it to survive!” He soon found that he was not alone in feelings and was able to find 300 signatories from the school and the Manor Park, Newham community. On Thursday the 20th May he headed to the post box on Church Road to post his letter (image attached) to the Correspondence Manager at the BBC Trust Unit. His parting comment was “I am planning to save your wonderful radio station, I will protest to save you” He requested kindly for a response to be sent to the school. Hafiz and his 300 signatories will wait for the BBC’s decision which is due at the end of May.

Every year at Little Ilford School, a celebration evening is held to recognise the achievements of our Year 11 students. This year the evening took place on Thursday 6th May and was a huge success attended by over 400 staff, students, parents and carers. The aim of the evening was to give out a variety of awards for students who were nominated by their teachers for determination, hard work and their other fantastic achievements. Pictured are Head Boy Tanim (left) and Head Girl Bola (right) receiving their award for their contribution to the Student Council presented by Deputy Headteacher Ms Episcopo (middle). Awards were presented by special guests including our Governors and other members of the community, who we would like to thank for spending this special evening with us.

YEAR 11 LIS STUDENTS GET INVOLVED IN BBC RADIO’S ANY QUESTIONS?

For only the 2nd time since it started in 1948, “Any Questions” was broadcast live on National BBC Radio 4 in East London. Year 11 students were there to witness Jonathan Dimbleby chairing the topical debate from the London Muslim Centre in Whitechapel. The panellists were the former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, shadow business secretary Ken Clarke, senior politics editor at the New Statesman Mehdi Hasan and Liberal Democrat spokesman on communities and local government Julia Goldsworthy.

Overall, students had seen, heard and met some political heavyweights fight it out in the run up to some important elections. Will we see these students in public office in the future?

“I learnt a lot about the politics of the area as well as the nation. Furthermore, light was shed on some important societal issues as I learnt the opinions of some major politicians on these issues.”
Imran – Year 11

“I had a tremendous night with great politicians. I also got a picture with Ken Livingstone of the Labour party. How lucky can I get?”
Zaakir – Year 11

To listen to the show click here!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00r2fhb/Any_Questions_05_03_2010/

By Marcus Boyle – LIS Citizenship Department
Photo left to right: Sabir, Sufyan, Ken Livingston, Imran, Ruta and Zakir

Students, staff and parents got involved in a live debate on BBC presenter Nihal’s afternoon show on the BBC ASIAN NETWORK radio station yesterday. Transmitted from an LIS classroom, they covered topics like, how easy it is to make it to university and how gang culture affects young people and communities.

The show was also joined by Beat Boxing Champion MC Zani and Rapper Mumsy. Because of the schools involvement with BBC SCHOOL REPORT this year, some of the students who had worked on the project had a live link up with a Manchester school on BBC Five Live.

You can listen to it here but it’s only up there for a week! http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00rbmhl/Nihal_11_03_2010/

Well done to everyone who took part!
